UAV Down Under: Emerging commercial applications for Marine Operations

Abstract:

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are becoming increasingly ubiquitous and utilised in the coastal marine environment. Corrosion resistant and amphibious UAVs are increasingly becoming available. These crucial characteristics considerably increase the robustness of the UAV enabling a range of commercial applications in the aquatic environment.

Although the range of Amphibious UAVs is still limited, conventional non-waterproof UAVs are already being used to perform such applications as, yacht inspections, water sample taking or whale/shark monitoring. As a result, Australian Government agencies are developing a strong interest in using UAVs to monitor damage from erosion and impact to infrastructures due to storms.

As drones become more able to function under heavy, adverse environments in coastal marine conditions, they are also being considered for maritime rescue applications.

Water resistant UAVs are being deployed for use in complex remote environments with limited communication certainty. Field applications show that the technology must handle high levels of atmospheric contaminants, humidity, and salinity. We observed extreme weather conditions such as high wind levels, high salinity levels, and wave collisions.

This conference will detail the challenges of using UAVs in unconventional, harsh situations that will offer commercial application insights for future event scenarios.
